A Peek at the A.I. Commander
May is National Mobility Awareness Month – a time to raise awareness of mobility solutions. EMC is excited to talk about why we do what we do in this edition of The Technical Edge, as well as give a sneak peek at the prototype of the A.I. Commander! Our engineering team has been working hard on revamping an old system that is now becoming very popular in driving. We also are featuring the AEVIT Digitone, the 8-function audible switching device in our product spotlight.

EMC and The National Mobility Awareness Month
In 2012, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) established May as the National Mobility Awareness Month. This month encourages support, awareness, and education around the impact of mobility.
Electronic Mobility Controls has been a proud contributor to the industry of auto mobility since 1986. EMC's story starts with a mission of innovation that was fueled by compassion. Our founder, Scott Bolduc, was driven by a personal commitment to help his close friend Dale regain his independence after a life-changing motorcycle accident left him a quadriplegic. His knowledge of military aircraft allowed him to develop a system that pioneered the small industry and redefine what’s possible in adaptive driving.
Our drive comes from the belief in equity and the power of innovation. There is no challenge that can not be attempted. We believe that mobility is a key to freedom and equality in today's world. No one should be left behind.
The AEVIT System, by nature, is customizable and is able to be “shaped” to the user’s abilities. This aspect of our technology is very important to us because it allows people of different disabilities to use the system and operate a vehicle. From inputs that can be mixed and matched, custom made orthotics that are fabricated for the driver, and different ways to control the vehicle’s secondary’s, we have always kept the diverse drivers in mind. It’s not a one-size-fits-all solution—it’s a system built around people.
We do what we do because we believe in possibility. In people. In progress. Because when mobility becomes accessible to everyone, we all move forward—together.

AEVIT™ A.I. Commander Prototype
In January, we teased the name A.I. Commander, and now we’re ready to share more details!
The AEVIT VIC 2.0 (Voice Interactive Controls) was a speech recognition system that translated verbal commands into vehicle functions. This system was an amazing asset to have in your vehicle. Now, years later, we’re revamping it.
The A.I. Commander is a complete reworking of the VIC system. Our engineering team meticulously dissected and analyzed each part of the old VIC system to identify areas of improvement. We’re currently in the prototyping phase, and the A.I. Commander is showing a lot of promise.
The entire EMC crew has been involved in making this system the best it can be. A few weeks ago, each team member recorded their voice saying an activation command multiple times to help train the system. Try saying “Rear Wiper Wash” 30 times in a row without laughing! The goal is for the A.I. Commander to understand various cadences, pronunciations, and speech patterns of everyday people. The accuracy of recognizing verbal commands and responding with the corresponding function is improving everyday through it's thorough training.
At this stage, the system can recognize 61 commands related to the vehicle’s HVAC system, steering column, turn signals, shifting, windows, doors, and dash controls. The A.I. Commander will be as easy to use as the A.I. assistant on your phone. Simply prompt the system, say your command, and the function will be activated in less than a second.
We’re excited to begin testing this device in a vehicle. Stay tuned to our social media for sneak peeks at these tests!
No release date has been set for the A.I. Commander.
Product Spotlight - Digitone
The audible 8-function switching device.
To operate, the driver only needs to depress a switch and hold it until the desired note is reached and then release. The vehicle function assigned to that note will activate instantly. The Digitone can be paired with one of the low effort switches, a Magnabox, power headrest, or an orthotic pin switch. The scan rate and volume are both programmable by your dealer in addition to the vehicle function assigned to each note. Digitone is easily customizable; your dealer can access the functions on-screen and change them for you. No need for complicated fixes or extended time without a vehicle. The popular functions normally utilized are turn signals, horn, dimmer, wiper speeds, wiper wash, cruise on, and cruise set. The Digitone control is designed to simply plug into the AEVIT™ 2.0 System and be programmed to your exact wants and needs. Digitone can also be ordered as a stand-alone product or in conjunction with other devices depending on your needs.

How Are You Activating Functions?
Do you secure activation buttons to the display or input devices to have quick and easy access to functions? How do you secure them? These Button Mounts are designed for effortless installation on the AEVIT 2.0 GenX Display or any input device using provided screws or ultra-strong double-sided tape. Mount activation buttons to the top, bottom, or side of your GenX Display or to the side of you input device for easy access to any function. Plus, our single button mounts are versatile enough to attach to any smooth surface in the vehicle!
Having the horn or blinkers' activation point mounted directly to the display with a large button eliminates the worry of finding the icon in a high stress situation. The low effort buttons also have a smooth surface for color coding and labeling.
Are you interested in mounting an activation button, but need a different design? Maybe you need the button to be on top of the input, the mount needs to fit a larger button, or you want a mount that is perfectly shaped to the car door's curves. Our team would be happy to help bring your idea to life with our Custom Design Programs.

Let's Talk About Secondary Functions
Upon initial activation, the display shows core vehicle functions that are typically located near the steering wheel, such as turn signals, windshield wipers, headlights, and related controls. Switching to the AUX screen reveals the programmable auxiliaries. Option A includes four programmable auxiliaries, while Options B and C include one each. These auxiliaries are configurable and can be assigned to a wide range of vehicle functions. Mirror control is a common assignment; however, users who do not frequently adjust their mirrors may reassign these to alternative functions.
There is a common misconception that installing a high-tech system like AEVIT requires disabling existing vehicle controls. This is not the case. AEVIT does not deactivate any factory functions. Instead, it may only change that activation point. However, due to how the system interfaces with the vehicle, certain modern features—such as parking assist or any function that takes control of the vehicle—are only accessible while the vehicle is in able-body mode.
For user's that are not able to activate the OEM switch, these functions can be rerouted to one of the auxiliaries. This is applicable for functions like the wheelchair ramp, transfer seat, rear wiper, tow mode, or the sunroof control...
One increasingly utilized function is "Push to Talk," which enables voice-activated control over phone calls, music, navigation, or radio. This is typically located on the steering wheel, but if the OEM wheel isn't in use, it’s difficult to activate. This is a great function to have as an auxiliary.
There are a great amount of functions that can be controlled through AEVIT and a few different ways you can control them. For more information check out our website or reach out to the EMC Sales team. They are always happy to chat which products can make the vehicle a more comfortable and functional ride.
